The Scripture Squad responds...

From: jaime

I was wondering if "Christmas" is really the time Jesus was born, and if it really should be celebrated? Because I read that that date of the year is when the sun is at its farthest point and at 12:00 midnight the earth cycle starts getting closer to the sun. So it would be like a celebration of the birth of the sun.

Dear Jaime,

We do not know the date of Christ's birth. Traditions differ about the time of year in which Jesus was born. Some suggest April; others early January.

There is no evidence that the early church celebrated his birth before A. D. 300. The date of December 25 was first mentioned in the time of Constantine about A. D. 325 and this date is used by most Protestants and the Roman Catholic church. The Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate his birth on January 6 while the Armenian church celebrates on January 19.

The word Christmas is formed of Christ plus mass meaning a religious service in commemoration of the birth of our Savior. It is a normal expression of love and reverence for Jesus Christ. The day or date doesn't matter as much as our heart attitude toward Jesus.
