The Scripture Squad responds...

From: Michael

How many sons did Abraham have and from what book does this quote come from: "A man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink and to be merry."?

Abraham's first born son was named Ishmael. Ishmael's mother was Hagar. Ishmael means "whom God hears." You can read about this in Genesis 16.

In Genesis 21, you can read about the birth of Isaac, Abraham's second son. Isaac's mother was Sarah. Isaac means "laughter."

After Sarah's death, Abraham remarried a woman named Keturah. To this union were born the children Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah. You can read about this in Genesis 25:1-8. So we read that Scripture records Abraham as being the father of eight sons.

You also asked: from what book does this quote come from: "A man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink and to be merry."

This quote is found in Ecclesiastes 8:15:

"Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun." (KJV)

Don't forget to read to the end of the book though! : ) While Ecclesiastes deals with life's inexplicable occurrences and paradoxes and life is to be enjoyed because it is the gift of God, the wise man will live his life in obedience to God, recognizing that God will eventually judge all men ( 3:16-17; 12:14) Solomon's conclusion is found in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14:

"The conclusion, when all has been heard, is fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil." (NASB)
