The Scripture Squad responds...

From: Ruth

I am interested to know which of the following approaches you feel is the best way to deal with "Trick or Treating."

For several years I gave out items I purchased at the Christian bookstore, some of which were specifically made for that purpose. Little books with a children's Bible story in them. "Jesus loves you" book marks, pencils, etc.

I got so fed up because most of the kids were young teens and they were only interested in how many times they could come to your door before you recognized them and turned them away. They weren't interested in the things I was giving.

So....the last 3 or 4 years I have turned out the porch light and gone out to dinner for the duration.

I have purchased several copies of a tract that explains the origin, meaning and perils of participating in Halloween. Most people I have given it to just blow it off and continue as usual. I have come to believe that participating with Christian items would not please the Lord. Your views would be interesting and helpful and appreciated. I can see you have much discernment. Thank you.

Hi Ruth!

We cannot help but read your letter and have the following Scripture from Isaiah 55:11 come to mind:

"So shall My word be which goes froth from My mouth; It shall not return to me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it."

Further we see in Hebrews 4:12

"For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Let us make the most of every opportunity to shed light in darkness, precious Ruth! Your doorstep may be the only place a lost soul hears the words, "Jesus loves you." Even if someone only glances at His Word on the items you've given out, the Bible promises those words are living and active and don't float off into the wind...they stick in the soul!

DawnCCC recalls a young student of hers leaving pictures of rainbows with "God loves you" on her desk. She'd glance at it, thinking she knew all this, and move on. However, when it was the moment she needed to know His Word about eternal life, those drawings and the cheerful face of the young girl came back to her, emphasizing that salvation for many is a long process and every seed planted is important!
