The Scripture Squad responds...

From: mp

HELP!!! Can you send me a list of verses, or chapters, that will give me insight to this stronghold of temper, that satan is able to grab me with at times?

Hi mp!

Oh mp, how many times have we all wished we could hold our tongues and turn our anger into a response that would be a glory to God instead of something that would make God cringe?

Proverbs 29:11 says: A fool always loses his temper, But a wise man holds it back.

Ouch!

James could relate in James 1:19-20:

"This you know, my beloved brethren. But let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God."

Here are some Bible verses for you to look up and get deep in your heart (something we would all be wise to do!)

  • Anger is not in itself sinful. (Psalms 7:11; 1 Kings 11:9; 2 Kings 17:18; Mark 3:5)
  • Be slow to become angry. (Proverbs 14:17; Proverbs 14:29)
  • Love covers a multitude of sins and overlooks many offenses. Proverbs 10:12; Proverbs 12:16; Proverbs 17:9; Proverbs 19:11; 1 Peter 4:8)
  • Seek the way of love. (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)
  • Cain's anger turned into hate and murder. (Genesis 4:3-8)
  • Hot words stir up strife. (Proverbs 15:1)
  • A hot-tempered man creates dissension. (Proverbs 15:18)
  • Do not associate with a hot-tempered man. (Proverbs 22:24-25)
  • Control yourself. (Proverbs 25:28; Proverbs 29:22; Proverbs 30:33)
  • Fits of rage belong to our sinful nature, the way of sin. (Galatians 5:19-21)
  • Through the Spirit you can overcome the sin of a hot temper. (Galatians 5:22-25)
  • Handle anger in a godly way. Do not let the sun go down on your anger. (Ephesians 4:26)

You may want to read through all these verses and then write each on an index card and put one on your bathroom mirror or car visor to memorize each week.
