The Scripture Squad responds...

From: Sydney

I have been writing a paper on the Eucharist, contrasting the Roman Catholic belief in transubstantiation and the Protestant belief of the representation of the sacraments. I have, to my great surprise, come to the conclusion that the two beliefs are not as different as I had thought. Could you please clarify the difference between the two beliefs and then tell me which is more Biblically based? It seems that the two sides are arguing close to the same points when you really look at it. Am I right? Thanks so much for your time, and thanks for being there. God bless you and your ministry!

Thanks for the question Sydney!

We're sorry, but the Scripture Squad does not address denominational differences as you've described here.

We will however, lead you to 1 Corinthians 11:23-34 (which references Luke 22) to look Scriptural references regarding the Lord's Supper, one of the two outward rites prescribed by Christ to be performed by His Church.

Pray for direction from our Tutor, the Holy Spirit before studying these verses. What meaning does God lead you to as to what the Lord's Supper is?

  • Transubstantiation (elements are changed into body and blood of Christ)
  • Consubstantiation (the body and blood of Christ are present and combined with the elements)
  • Memorial (the elements are a symbol of Christ's body and blood)
  • Spiritual (the elements invoke the spiritual presence of Christ)

May the Lord lead you in your search for wisdom regarding this issue.
