The Scripture Squad responds...

From: Ken

Jesus did not have God in Him until He was approximately 12 or 13? Can this be correct? Wasn't Jesus, The Christ right from the get-go?

Dear Ken,

Let's first establish the FACT that Jesus was God in the flesh.. and from the beginning (key word) ..

  • John 1:1 - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Word = Jesus

  • 1 John 1:1 "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched - this we proclaim concerning the Word of life."

  • Revelation 19:13 "He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood and his name is the Word of God." This is a pretty fitting description of Christ considering we are cleansed by His blood.

So, in the beginning was Jesus and Jesus was with God and Jesus was God. From the beginning of time God was there and Jesus was God in the flesh here on earth.

Let's look at Jesus at age 12. He went to Jerusalem with His earthly parents for the Feast of the Passover. When they left, He stayed behind and went to the temple courts, sitting among teachers, listening, asking questions, etc. In no way does this mean that God was not in Him. Remember, He was God in the flesh. He was always God - from the beginning. the only thing that is mentioned about Him when He was 12 was when He went to the Feast of the Passover and stayed behind in the temple courts - age has nothing to do with it. Jesus didn't start His earthly ministry until He was 30 years old (Luke 3:23), so age really has nothing to do with it. YES.. you are right.. Jesus was the Christ from the get-go.

  • Luke 2:21-52 Simeon was a righteous and devout man. Anna was a prophetess. When Jesus was brought into the temple to be dedicated to God, they knew at that time when they saw Him that He was the Christ. So from His birth (even back to the part where the angels appeared to the shepherds), it was established that he was the Christ - age had no bearing on this.

  • Hebrews 13:8 - "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Once again, yes, Jesus was the Christ from the get-go! Nothing has ever changed OR will change about that.

  • Colossians 1:15-16 talks about the supremacy of Christ (His Supreme-ness, if you will :) Let's check this out because this is GOOD stuff. He IS the image of God, the firstborn over ALL creation - for by Him ALL things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible AND invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created BY Him and for Him.

We've established that Jesus was God here on earth in the flesh, that age had absolutely NO bearing on that FACT, and oh yes.. He was most definitely The Christ from the get-go! Amen!
