Home Education: Is it for You? See Also: What About Socialization and Is it a Second-Rate Education?
Why do some families choose the home schooling option? Most feel it is a superior method of teaching / learning. Many teach their kids at home to shield them from certain things, such as violence, immorality, humanism, etc. Home educators control what their kids study, and what they are exposed to. They also avoid many of the issues inherently related to peer dependency. Are You Qualified to Teach Your Child? If you are of average intelligence, reasonably mature, literate, and you love your children, then you are qualified to instruct them. The beauty of home schooling is that we, as loving parents, can decide what is best for our own kids' education. We have the freedom to customize curricula and materials for each child, with flexible scheduling and unlimited time with the children to enhance their learning experiences. We are not limited as to what may be taught or discussed (i.e. prayer, Bible study, etc.). For our family, home schooling has been a great blessing. Not only have I learned many things along with my children, but I have learned so much about my children's personalities, strengths and weaknesses, allowing me to more fully comprehend what tremendous blessings these precious ones are, and what a privilege it is to be their mom! "Home Work" For You Don't decide against home schooling your children because of fear of failure. Your decision needs to be guided by your convictions, with much research and consideration. Please don't automatically assume that you cannot possibly teach your children at home. In fact, I have some "home work" for you: Ask the Lord if home schooling is something He would have you look into. If He impresses upon you to do this, He will also give you the wisdom and where-with-all to do it. He is faithful! Talk City even has a chat room dedicated to home schoolers, #Parenting-HomeSchooling, where you could go to meet with home educators from around the globe. There are also many home schooling resources available, from curriculum publishers to online magazines to state home educators' associations. Are you up for the home work challenge? ; )
